was developed from biofeedback. The process
helps "exercise" the brain, enhances self-
regulation of mood and improves overall
stability. Neurofeedback has been used to
successfully treat anxiety, depression,
attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders, panic
attacks, migraines and sleep disorders among
others.How does it work?
After an interview where client history and
treatment goals are discussed, the therapist
sets up a special EEG monitor and software on a
computer. Electrodes are placed on the client's
scalp to monitor brainwave activity. The
electrodes don't send any "shocks" or transmit
information to the client. They simply monitor
the electrical activity in the brain. As certain
brainwave frequencies increase or decrease, the
client is given visual and auditory feedback on
their computer monitor. In a sense the brain is
being trained to self-regulate and maintain a
balanced state of equilibrium.
How long does it take?
A typical length of training is 30 - 40
sessions. Each training session takes roughly 40
minutes (30 minutes training time, plus set up
and progress review). The good news is that the
benefits of neurofeedback training are
long-lasting in most individuals. Barring brain
injury, traumatic life events or something of
that nature, the beneficial effect of
neurofeedback has been documented to be
maintained by the brain's own self-regulation
processes.
